Why Worship?

Worship is a funny kind of word we dare to use in this often-called “post-Christian” age. But it is a product of design and fact and understanding. It acknowledges the need we have as human beings to be in touch with the transcendent – that part of being human that is soul, and so much more than day-to-day existence. It’s a part of all that is universal. The spiritual is every bit as much a part of being human as is the physical.

We exercise our bodies in a gym (quite religiously, actually), so it is not really such a stretch to want to exercise our spirits, too. Church can be just the place to do it, and worship is the way. Obviously, the passion at the Christian Church is the life and witness of the One we know as Christ. The difference is, with The United Church (and certainly here at Northlea United), we all are invited and encouraged to discover how Christ is real for us, how our lives are different (or how they can be), so we can make a difference for the better in the world.

The Christian story is a fabulous story. It is our cultural tradition. The profound foundation of our hope and definition, and the soul at our sense of possibility and hope. The United Church does not ask you to accept a statement of dogmatic faith. Rather, The United Church extends the invitation and the hope that we can grow in faith together and, just the same as Jesus, overcome every single source of separation and division in this world. Worship is participatory and responsive, and, at its best, provides the means for insight and deep joy.
